About a month ago, a local 4-H and FFA club from Christmas, Florida came out to our Audubon Park Community Market, looking for buyers for the livestock they had raised for the last year.  These were middle school and high school kids who were determined to raise these animals for 12 consecutive months and bring them to the Central Florida Fair and auction them off for the best price.  The official awards aside, they were in competition with each other, raising the hogs to the specifications of the pork industry (which, well, we blatantly disagree with, but it is what it is).  A young guy, named Colton, came out and talked to me for a good 20 minutes that night, about his hog Muzzleloader, who he was hoping would get to be 250 lbs. plus!  Turns out, I needed a hog for teh upcoming pig roast we are going to do for our Kickstarter Opening party for the Big Wheel Food Truck.  Well, I thought it was awesome that these kids took care of these animals and did such a great job, so this last weekend, Tim and I headed to the fair to get us some pork! 

We first got to the fair, and ran into Colton and the rest of his gang from the Camo-N-Critters 4-H Club.  He was pretty stoked we were there, but he said that another lady had her eye on his pig (which placed 4th place in it’s category!).  Well, sounded like a bidding war was going to ensue, and certainly enough, it did.  All in all, Big Wheel Provisions purchased two hogs that night from these kids, both Colton’s and another raised by a whole 4-H Chapter in Orange County, and we can’t wait to get the product back from the processing facility where they will take care of slaughter.  Believe it or not, Colton and his family are going to attend our opening party, so he can meet a bunch of people who appreciate his hard work other than me! 

Next year, we hope to gather a bunch of local chefs who wouldn’t mind supporting youth farming and the local food scene, and who don’t mind having some fun at the fair!  Wanna join us?
